Colby Wins vs Wesleyan in Season Opener

Waterville, Maine. - Colby opened their season this Saturday against Wesleyan University, defeating the Cardinals in a nail-biting 9-8 win. The Mules are now 1-0 overall.

Wesleyan came out swinging against Colby, scoring three unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes of the game before the Mules were finally able to get a shot to land, resulting in a 3-1 lead for the Cardinals. The second quarter saw a lot more action from the Mules despite Wesleyan's early goal. Colby scored twice in as many minutes in addition to two more goals, tying up the score at 5-5 heading into the second half. Wesleyan and Colby traded goals in the third quarter, with Colby consistently taking the lead and Wesleyan consistently closing it. The score was 8-8 heading into the fourth and final quarter. For a while, it looked like overtime might be in the cards, until a goal with under seven minutes left by Kins Helmer assisted by Tate Ban gave the Mules the final push they needed to secure their 9-8 win over Wesleyan.

Helmer's goal was not her only impressive contribution; Helmer was three for three with her shots, all on goal. Julia Jardina led the team with four goals, again going four for four with her shots on goal, making every single one, in addition to five draw controls and four ground balls. Defensively, Jillian Kane contributed six saves and Gisele Uva led the team in caused turnovers with four.

Colby looks to 6:30 pm on Tuesday, at home, against St. Joseph's College of Maine for their next non-conference match.
