Waterville, Maine – The #3 Colby College Women's Ice Hockey team faced the Bantams of Trinity College in the quarter-finals of the NESCAC championship this afternoon. The Mules put up an impressive fight, ending in a 2-1 win to advance to NESCAC Semifinals.
Colby entered the game with high energy as
Lizzy Hamel scored just 4:27 into the period. The first period saw four total penalties and a two-player advantage for the Bantams, but Colby's defense held strong, with goaltender
Mandy Busky making 12 key saves. After some more intense play,
Courtney Schumacher broke away and scored on a one-on-one with Trinity's goalie to put the Mules ahead 2-0 with 4:47 remaining in the opening 20 minutes. Heading into the second period up by two, the Mules had strong offensive possession with 11 faceoff wins and seven shots on goal. Despite gaining a power-play opportunity the Mules weren't able to capitalize, but Busky's impressive 13 saves kept Trinity from breaking their deadlock. The third period was action-packed, with penalties on both sides, creating multiple power-play opportunities. Trinity capitalized on one, but that wasn't enough to bring the Mules down. After 20 minutes of strong play and Busky's outstanding 17 saves, the Mules secured a 2-1 victory.
The Mules will advance to the NESCAC semifinals next weekend which will be hosted by the highest remaining seed.
