Mules best Amherst in 2OT playoff thriller

Waterville, ME - The Colby College Mules (14-5-6, 8-5-5) defeated the Amherst College Mammoths (11-12-2, 8-8-2) by a score of 3-2 in their Saturday evening matchup. The Mules will advance in the NESCAC playoffs next weekend.

The first period saw no goals, but that was not an indicator of what was to come. The Mules struck first late in the second period when Matthew MacDonald scored off an assist from Bobby Landry. Leading 1-0 to start the third, Amherst's Oliver Flynn evened the game to open the frame. At the halfway mark, Jacob Pohl scored for Amherst to give them a 2-1 lead. Just two minutes later, Massimo Gentile evened the game at 2-2.

Twenty minutes of overtime didn't produce any results for either team, and it being playoffs, the game went into a second overtime. With 2:23 elapsed in the second overtime period, Colby made a break from the Amherst end. After chaos in the crease, Max Abene buried the puck in the back of the net through the five-hole of the Amherst goalie to win the game.

Cooper Rautenstrauch was in net for Colby; he saved 53 shots. Colby won 49 faceoffs to Amherst's 37.

The Mules will return to action on Saturday, March 8 at 4:30 PM when they take on the Tufts University Jumbos in Clinton, NY.
