Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Women's Ice Hockey team hosted the #3 Mammoths of Amherst College for a Friday night NESCAC matchup. The Mules' outstanding offensive and defensive plays allowed them to secure a remarkable 3-1 win, improving their conference record to 5-4-2 for the season.
Despite Amherst's impressive #3 ranking, Colby's confidence was evident in the first period as they dominated offensively. They generated four times as many shots on goal as the Mammoths and managed to kill off an Amherst power play. With 3:11 remaining,
Breanna Studley broke the deadlock with a shot from the top left to give Colby a 1-0 lead. The second period saw lots more back-and-forth play, and more intensity from both teams. Although Amherst managed to tie the game, just four minutes later at 13:57,
Kylie Makuh restored the Mules' advantage to 2-1 by scoring off a rebound from
Sydney McCormack. Colby held strong for the remainder of the period, with goaltender
Mandy Busky making 13 key saves as they headed into the third. Maintaining their momentum,
Megan Martodam scored for the Mules just 1:06 into the third period. The remainder of the third period saw 4v4 play and more aggression, yet Colby's defense remained unstoppable. The Mules controlled the game by blocking numerous shots from Amherst, including seven by
Jo Tattersall. Ultimately, Colby's outstanding play and Busky's 20 saves secured the 3-1 win over the #3-ranked Mammoths.
The Mules are back in action tomorrow afternoon and will host Amherst for a 3 pm puck drop.
