Waterville, Maine – The Colby College Women's Ice Hockey team rematched the #3-ranked Mammoths of Amherst College this afternoon in a thrilling NESCAC contest. Building on yesterday's win, the Mules came out strong, scoring just six minutes into the game. Although Amherst rallied to take a 2-1 lead, Colby's two third-period goals turned the tide for a 3-2 victory.
After yesterday's exciting win, the Mules brought lots of intensity in today's NESCAC matchup, gaining a power play just 1:31 into the first period. Just a few minutes later at 5:42,
Courtney Schumacher set the Mules ahead for a 1-0 game. Amherst leveled the score at the 11-minute mark, but Colby's defense held firm with five saves from goaltender
Grace Caligiuri in the period. The second period saw an early goal for Amherst, but the Mules kept their energy and intensity high. With seven shots on goal, seven face-off wins, and nine saves by Caligiuri, Colby fought hard till the end of the 20 minute mark. Heading into the third period down by a goal, the Mules set out to tie the game. At 11:45,
Megan Martodam answered by scoring her second goal of the weekend. With 8:15 left to play, both Colby and Amherst battled hard to break the 2-2 tie. Just four minutes later
Molly Lefebvre netted the winning goal following an outstanding passing sequence involving Martodam and
Breanna Studley. Caligiuri's 22 saves and the Mules' relentless defense secured the exciting 3-2 win.
The Mules will head down to Middletown Connecticut next weekend to face the Cardinals of Wesleyan University.
