Newton, Massachusetts - Colby Men's Basketball was on the road today against Lasell for their final matchup before Thanksgiving. The Mules continued their undefeated start to the season, defeating the Lasers 75-66 after a strong second-half performance. This win takes Colby to 5-0 overall.
Although the Mules came out strong from the whistle, Lasell led for the majority of the half. Marcos Montiel was instrumental in keeping Colby in the game after falling behind early. After the Lasers took the lead, the junior guard forced a steal, had an assist to Dan Civello to cut their deficit to three, and then buried a three-pointer minutes later to pull the Mules within five. Colby continued to knock down shots, but Lasell seemed to always have an answer. The Lasers dominated in the paint, converting on over 50% of their field goals while shooting around 20% from beyond the arc. It wasn't until later in the half that strong defensive possessions from the Mules stopped Lasell's offense. Go-ahead three pointers from Max Poulton and Civello gave Colby a one-point lead with two minutes to go. Both teams would trade the lead three more times, but ultimately the Mules trailed heading into the break, down 37-38.
To start the second half, neither team registered a basket for the first two minutes. This defensive rigidity coming out of the break was key for Colby, who seemed to figure out how to stop Lasell's offense as their field goal percentage dropped to 32%. Forcing these contested and missed shots didn't go to waste, as the Mules out-rebounded the Lasers 55-36. Offensively, Colby led by three before Lasell retook the lead midway through the half. However, after a go-ahead three-pointer from Matthew Lamy with seven minutes to go, the Mules started to run away with the game. Sam Hinman knocked down a jumper and a layup that was followed by Savion Stroud, who converted from beyond the arc and also finished at the rim for a quick 9-0 run that would ultimately seal the win.
Colby is back in action, Sunday, November 30th, as they host the University of Maine at Fort Kent in another non-conference matchup.Â
