Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Women's Ice Hockey team opened their 2025-2026 season against the Polar Bears of Bowdoin College. After an exciting three periods of fast-paced play, the Mules fell 0-3 but showed tremendous promise to begin the year.
Colby entered the game with intensity, applying strong offensive pressure and fierce defensive play from the opening faceoff. Despite a scoreless first period, the Mules controlled much of the action, tallying 18 shots and winning nine of 16 faceoffs. Bowdoin earned three power-play opportunities, but Colby's defense held firm along with goaltender
Grace Caligiuri making 12 key saves in the period. Just 2:40 into the second period, Bowdoin broke through to take a 1-0 lead. However, this did not stop the Mules as they fired 16 more shots, and won 11 of 17 faceoffs. Colby earned a power-play chance at 17:36 but could not convert, though Caligiuri kept the score within reach with six additional saves. Trailing by one as they entered the third period, the Mules came out dominant, generating 10 shots within the first three minutes. Despite Colby's efforts, Bowdoin extended their lead at 4:38 and again at 9:03 to make it 3-0. The Mules continued to battle, firing 30 more shots in the third for a game total of 64. They earned three more power-play opportunities but were unable to capitalize. Caligiuri finished with 24 saves, and
Courtney Schumacher led all players with seven shots on goal. Despite the loss, the Mules demonstrated confidence, control, and strong possession on both ends of the ice, setting a competitive tone for the season ahead.
The Mules will face Bowdoin again tomorrow at 3:00 PM in Brunswick.
