Waterville, Maine - After leading his team to a win after a 24-point deficit, Kirk Cousins yelled a phrase that cut through a nation. "You like that!" Tonight felt like the same fiery entertainment, as the lead changed 8 times and went down to the wire. Ultimately, Marcos Montiel channeled his inner middle-aged dad and current Falcons quarterback, scoring a go-ahead layup that would give Colby their third win of the season. The 59-58 victory over Suffolk takes the Mules to 3-0 overall.
Contrary to the final score, Colby led the majority of the first half and at one point, by as much as 13. Early threes from Max Poulton and Mitch Humphrey gave the Mules a ten-point lead, and later, Savion Stroud and Sam Hinman brought Colby's lead back to double-digits. But responding quickly, Suffolk went on a 12-0 run in two and a half minutes to shrink the Mules' lead to one. Both teams then traded free throws and marginal leads, but it was Theo Pow who would convert on a fast break layup to take Colby into the half up one, 28-27.
In the second half, the low-scoring contest started to get momentum. After shooting an average of 27% from the field for Suffolk and 22% for Colby in the first half, both teams started to knock down shots. Trading the lead the whole half, it wasn't until five minutes left that the game started to take shape. Hinman buried a three to take the Mules' lead to four, but from then on, four more shots were made the rest of the game. Suffolk responded with a three-pointer of their own and a go-ahead layup with two minutes left on the clock. But Montiel was the deciding factor, as Humphrey found the junior guard for what would be the game-winning layup. In the last ten seconds, a turnover from Hinman gave Suffolk the ball back, but a missed three-pointer gave Colby a close but well-deserved win. Yes, Kirk Cousins, I did like that.
The Mules are back in action tomorrow for their final game of the Colby Classic doubleheader. They'll host Endicott College at 1 pm, looking to continue their undefeated start to the season.
