Waterville, Maine - In a game usually deemed the 'Battle of Waterville,' the matchup tonight didn't live up to the rivalrous name. For the twelfth year in a row, Colby took down Thomas College to take their matchup record to 29-3. The 96-73 win boosts the Mules' record to 2-0 overall, with both wins coming on the road.
Making his first start for Colby, Mitch Humphrey capitalized on the roster rotation and came out swinging. The sophomore went four for four from beyond the arc, giving the Mules a quick 12-3 lead. Fellow sophomores Jack Gatjanis and Dan Civello also had strong first halves. Gatjanis got to the rim twice early in the game and buried a three-pointer to give the Mules an eight-point lead with twelve minutes to go. Later in the half, Civello used his height for two easy buckets in the paint, but also grabbed a three-pointer of his own to stretch Colby's lead to 21. Humphrey continued to stay hot after his bright start, sinking two more threes to give him an 18-point half while shooting 6 for 7 from deep. The Mules led 51-37 heading into the half.
Coming out of the break, the first half narrative remained the same as Gatjanis, Civello, and Humphrey continued to dominate from across the floor. Also adding to Colby's offensive threat was senior Sam Hinman, who went 3-6 from three en route to a 12-point game from off the bench. Defensively, the Mules kept Thomas to seven offensive rebounds and beat them off the glass overall, 48-32. Civello grabbed 14 of his own, notching a double-double with 16 points.
Overall, Colby seemed comfortable and far superior to their opponents. Looking to translate this momentum in front of a home crowd, the Mules will host Suffolk University and Endicott College this Friday and Saturday in the Colby Classic.
