The Colby Mens's Swimming and Diving team swam to a historic victory as they defeated the #20 ranked Amherst Mammoths for the first time in school history. The two schools have been competing for almost 3 decades and this was a huge victory for Colby. The finals score was 132-130. From seniors down to first years everyone was involved in helping to secure this and many swimmers had multiple wins on the day.
The Mules started out in dominating fashion by taking victories in the first 4 events. The tone was set right away with a win in the 200 Medley relay by the team ofÂ
Brandon Xiong,
Shepard Kerscher,
Alex Ruckel-Bekefi and
Ethan Chang. First year Ruckel-Bekefi swam the 2nd fastest time in school history on the butterfly leg. The victories continued as
Brendan Kirberger won the 1000 Freestyle,
Amaan Siddiqui won the 200 Freestyle and Xiong earned his second victory in the 100 Backstroke which he quickly followed 3 events later with another win in the 50 Freestyle.
After the first break the Mules came storming out again as Siddiqui claimed another victory in the 100 Freestyle. This was followed by an incredible finish in the 200 Backstroke as first year
Breacan Shea came back from two seconds down in the last 50 to win the event by .01seconds. Kirberger won his second event of the meet as he overcame the entire field in the last 100 of the 500Â to win by over 2 seconds, Joining in on the victories was
Brandon Morrison who out touched the Amherst swimmer in the 100 Butterfly to win by .15 seconds.
The meet came down to the final relay where Colby needed to win to secure the victory. The team of Siddiqui, Xiong, Chang and Morrison did just that and the Mules were able to walk away with the win and a mark in school history. It was a total team victory and a great way to start off the season.
Colby looks to continue their wining ways when they will compete next Sunday November 23rd against Hamilton College and Trinity College. The meet will take place at Wesleyan College in Middletown, CT and begins at 11:00 am.
