Waterville, Maine. - Colby came out on top tonight in a non-conference match against the Eagles of Husson University with a final score of 88-67. The Mules improve to an overall record of 7-7.
Husson and Colby were well-matched in the first quarter, trading off short spurts of energy but ultimately balancing out at 19 points apiece. Colby experienced an offensive renaissance in the second quarter, racking up an additional 28 points while holding Husson down at 22 points, resulting in a 47-41 lead for the Mules heading into the second half.
Chelsea Ibenegbu's buzzer beater at the end of the second quarter set the pace for the second half, with Colby taking massive offensive strides in the third quarter. The Mules scored a total of 30 points in the third quarter alone while holding Husson down to only 13 for a score of 77-54 heading into the fourth quarter. Defense was the name of the game to round out this match, with both teams scoring the lowest total points of the day. Still, the Mules prevailed, finishing out the game with a final score of 88-67.
Where to begin? The Mules' incredible offensive showing had a number of superstars. Colby boasted not one, not two, not three, but five players who scored in the double digits, led by
Kate Olenik with 20 points and followed by
Defne Pekinbas with 16.
Caroline Hartley led the team in rebounds with nine, also contributing nine points, four assists, two steals, and a block. Ibenegbu led the team in assists with five, also contributing 11 points and six rebounds.
