Brunswick, Maine - The last time out against Bowdoin, Colby lost 5-1, at home, at the end of the season. This year, under a new coach, with nine recruits and six departed seniors, the Mules went to Bowdoin and put up a fight. A last-minute winner ultimately gave Colby their first loss of the campaign but compared to the previous season, this team seems to be in a great spot. 2-3 was the final score, dropping the Mules' record to 1-1.
Unlike their season opener, Colby came out to a flying start. Six minutes after the whistle, Mario Simoes got his second goal in two games to give the Mules an early lead. Bowdoin threw everything they had at Colby, posting six shots in the first half which put goalkeeper Brendan McCarthy under fire. Eventually, the Polar Bears tied the game up, leaving nothing to separate the two sides heading into the break.
The start of the second half almost mirrored the first. Yet again Colby brought the energy early and scored against the run of play as Chase Dolinko gave the Mules the lead, his first goal of the season. Bowdoin wasted no time in retaining control of the game, dominating possession which led to their second equalizer. Both teams threw players up the field for the remainder of the half to get a winner. Simoes had a header in the box but had his effort saved, giving the Mules a spark.
Although Bowdoin eventually found that winner, Colby will walk away from this game knowing it could have gone either way–offering a positive note to a stinging loss. A game full of promise this early in the season against a tough opponent shows the Mules have what it takes to be clinical in high-pressure games, especially if they continue to start fast and capitalize on chances.
On Tuesday, Colby travels to Gorham, Maine for a non-conference match against the University of Southern Maine.
