Waterville, Maine - Famous NFL coach Vince Lombardi once said, "We didn't lose the game; we just ran out of time." In Colby's case, that statement justified their hard-fought game this afternoon, one in which they looked capable and composed of going toe to toe with a talented Williams squad. After going down with a quarter of an hour to play, the Mules didn't quit and looked dominant in search of the tying goal. However, this 2-1 loss takes Colby to 3-4 overall and 0-4 in NESCAC conference play.
Both teams came out strong to start the contest, forcing Brendan McCarthy into two crucial one-handed saves. Colby quickly settled into the game and not long after created multiple chances from wing-backs Oliver Daboo and Charlie Scott who provided width and an extra man in attack. Daboo had two shots from the left side of the box which narrowly went wide right. Colby conceded after an unfortunate deflection looped over McCarthy but responded brilliantly, holding the Ephs in their own half. The Mules' constant counter-press paid off as Jasper Paez found himself in space on the top of the box, striking it sweetly and equalizing for Colby as it glanced in off the right post. The Mules ended the half with momentum as they consistently outplayed their NESCAC counterparts.
Coming out of the break, the energy both teams brought from the first half had switched into a will to control the ball as legs started to tire. Williams made frequent substitutions while Colby stuck with their starters–the few they did make had big impacts as Nicholas Donnelly had two headers late in the game that unfortunately were saved. Colby's ability to counterattack from their low block produced opportunities in the box, giving a feeling that a goal was coming. However, Williams ended up taking the lead against the run of play. The Mules then committed players forward, registering four shots in the last fifteen minutes of the half. Like the first half, Colby's narrow attacking players allowed space out wide for crosses into the box. Mario Simoes and Charlie Scott connected off these crosses–both sending headers at the goalie. Ultimately the Mules couldn't find a way through but finished the game brilliantly as they continued to push for an equalizer.
Colby is back in action tomorrow at 2:00 pm as they host current NESCAC champions and 25th-ranked Amherst in a highly anticipated matchup.
