Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Men's Soccer team is prepared to kickoff the 2024 season Tuesday night across town at Thomas College for the annual Elm City Bowl. Last year, the Mules took care of the Terriers 4-0 pushing their series wins to six of the last seven matchups.
Colby is coming off of a 6-6-2 record from last season and will look to improve on that with the help of four returning seniors after graduating six. Goalkeeper
Brendan McCarthy enters his senior year after tallying 13 starts, 43 saves and four shutouts in 2023. Offensively,
Mario Simoes '25 and
Nicholas Donnelly '27 return as the top goal scorers from last year gathering six a piece to go along with two assists. This season the team has added on nine first-years.
The Mules are under new leadership with head coach Greg Cumpstone taking the reigns. He comes to Mayflower Hill after serving as the associate head coach at Wesleyan Univeristy during the 2022-23 season.
"I have been really impressed with the hunger and focus of the guys," said Cumpstone. "They are working extremely hard in training and integrating the new ideas we are trying to teach them. They have been supplementing their on-pitch work with daily gym sessions, weekly mental performance sessions, and have been very professional in their post-session recovery-- making full use of ice baths and norma-tech devices. I think we have a good blend of seasoned upperclassmen who have played thousands of NESCAC minutes, as well as a talented group of underclassmen-- including first years, sophomores, and transfers-- who are eager to prove themselves in the league. We know it will be tough, but the team seem ready to embrace the challenges we will face."
Cumpstone is assisted by Ben Manoogian who joined the Men's Soccer coaching staff to begin the 2023-24 academic year.
Tuesday's game is set for a 7:30pm kickoff at Smith Field on the campus of Thomas College. Fans can follow alongside the action using the
