Middletown, Conn. - The 13th ranked Colby Women's Lacrosse team is headed back to the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday for the third straight season after upsetting the hosts and fellow NESCAC school #2 Wesleyan on Saturday 7-5 in round three of the tournament.
Ally Franz got the Mules on the board first at the eight minute mark of the opening quarter but the Cardinals answered three minutes later for the only goals of the first 15 minutes of play. The first eight minutes of the second quarter were also defensive heavy until
Tori Congdon found the back of the net putting Colby up one. In the final minute and 30 seconds of the first half Wesleyan answered once again to tie the game 2-2 but the Mules found two quick goals off the sticks of
Julia Maimonis and
Tate Ban just 40 seconds apart to take a 4-2 lead into the halftime break.
The score stayed at 4-2 going into the final frame as both teams defenses were impenetrable in the third quarter. Following Colby's goal from
Zoey Verbesey to open the fourth quater, the Cardinals rallied notching three unanswered goals for a 5-5 tie with just under eight minutes to go. The Mules locked in tallying two goals, one from
Cami McDonald and the other from
Kins Helmer, with under five minutes to play to stop the Wesleyan comeback and take the NCAA tournament round three victory 7-5.
Colby's win was a full team effort as each goal was scored by a different player. Ban had three assists in the contest while Helmer, Maimonis, and
Gennie Littlejohn recorded an assist each.
Julia Jardina and
Ainsley Dion combined for nine draw controls in the matchup as
Sarah Hearns finished with 13 saves.
