Waterville, Maine - Tuesday night under the lights the Colby Men's Lacrosse team took down the MIT Engineers 11-9 after an amazing comeback, taking them to 5-4 overall.
The first quarter did not start well for the Mules. A quick 3-0 lead for MIT made for a bleak start and a fourth to end the quarter didn't help. However, the remaining quarters were the antithesis of the first as Colby came out in the second as a completely different team. Cormac O'Neill opened the scoring, followed by a solo effort from Harrison Leenhouts, and goals from Luke Laferriere and Ben Reynolds both assisted by Doug McCarthy. One second quarter goal canceled out a tied game but the Mules were only down 5-4 heading into the break.
Coming out of half the momentum was all Colby's. O'Neill spearheaded the charge, finding Gavin Rothenberg to tie the game and minutes later dancing through multiple defenders for a SportsCenter-worthy goal to give the Mules the lead. But the sophomore didn't stop there as he and McCarthy each found the net once more in the third, assisting each other on both goals. O'Neill wasn't the only one with a hat trick on the night as Rothenberg inevitably put two more away in the fourth. The left-handed freshman leads the team with 22 goals and made it a three-game streak with at least a hat-trick. McCarthy combined with Rothenberg for his final two giving him five assists on the night and six points total. O'Neill ended with five goal contributions as he registered two assists. Finally, Will Heisler had a standout day in goal with seventeen saves on the night, one coming from his left foot as he stretched to deflect a low shot.
Colby is looking to ride this momentum heading into the tail end of their season as they host Middlebury this Saturday in one of their last five NESCAC games to end the year.
