Waterville, Maine - The sun was out today for Senior Day as the fourth years took to the field for one of their last times. After a promising first half, Colby fell to Trinity at home. The 7-11 loss takes them to 5-7 on the season and 1-7 in NESCAC Conference play. With two conference games remaining, the Mules still are in contention for the postseason tournament.
The first quarter did not start in Colby's favor, going down 4-0. However, a quick turnaround after the quarter ended saw the Mules go on a 5-2 run to end the half. Cormac O'Neill found Bennett Goller to open the scoring, followed up twenty seconds later by a Cormac Wright solo goal to halve Colby's deficit. Gavin Rothenberg notched his team-leading 25th goal of the season, the freshman doing it all himself to find the back of the net this time. Freshman Carson Ahola grabbed his first goal of the season off an assist from Trevor Pettibone, followed up minutes later by O'Neill to end the half. The Mules trailed 6-5 heading into the break.
A second-half surge from Trinity pulled them just out of reach as two goals from Colby couldn't salvage a tie. O'Neill grabbed his second of the game and 14th of the year but capped off a brilliant display with another assist in the fourth quarter, this time to Doug McCarthy to give the Mules 7. O'Neill had a game-leading four points on the day while on the defensive end, Will Heisler had 17 saves on the night.Â
Colby travels down south to Williamstown, Massachusetts this Saturday as they look to keep their postseason hopes alive against Williams. The Ephs are currently 4-4 in the NESCAC conference and sit only three places above the Mules. Look for a back-and-forth game as both teams fight for those coveted final spots.
