Williamstown, Massachusetts - It was another tough outing for the Mules as the NESCAC proves to be tough competition for a young team. Williams sealed Colby's fate this afternoon, knocking them out of potential postseason play with a 7-12 loss. The Mules are now 5-8 overall and remain 1-8 in NESCAC conference play.Â
The first quarter was pivotal in determining the outcome of the game as Williams put seven past Colby's defense. The Mules faced 16 shots in the first fifteen minutes, giving Will Heisler a lot to do as he came up with four saves. On the offensive end, Gavin Rothenberg got Colby on the board off an assist from fellow freshman Luke Laferriere. Rothenberg ended up scoring two more in the first for yet another hat-trick in only one quarter. Down 7-3, their deficit grew as the Ephs found three more. Cormac O'Neill and Cormac Wright pulled two back to make the score 5-10 to end the half.
Coming out of the break, Colby had the momentum. They matched Williams' shot tally in the third quarter for the first time in the game which led to two goals. Jack Bowen rifled one past the Ephs' defense and not long later, Rothenberg grabbed his fourth–assisted by another freshman, Ethan Taerstein. From then on out the comeback slowly died down. Williams grabbed two more to cancel out the previous goals from the Mules, but it could have been more if not for Heisler who came up with eight saves in the fourth quarter. The sophomore goalie had a career-high 24 saves on the day. Rothenberg ended with four goals and an assist while O'Neill bagged one of each.Â
The Mules' season culminates this Wednesday as rivals Bates come to town. In a final game with little to play for, beating Bates still holds utmost importance to not only end the season on a high note, but also beat their in-state rivals at home. Â
