Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Completes Sweep of Jumbos

Medford, Mass. - The Colby Baseball team rode the momentum of Friday night's victory at Tufts to take both games of Saturday's double header and complete the three-game sweep of the Jumbos in Medford.  The Mules took the first game Saturday 8-5 and the second 11-4, improving their record to 20-4 on the season and catapulting to the top of the NESCAC East with a 5-1 conference record.

Game 1 Highlights:
  • Despite Colby scoring the first run of the contest, the Jumbos jumped in front with one run in the second and four more in the fourth, taking a 5-1 lead heading into the fifth inning.
  • Cole Palmeri took a run back in the fifth with his NESCAC-leading ninth home run of the season.
  • The Mules tied the game with three runs in the sixth, and jumped ahead with three more in the seventh. Ryan Grace plated two runs with a double in the sixth, and Patrick Shrake sent two more across with a 2RBI single in the seventh.
  • Shrake paced Colby with three hits in the game, and Charles Collins and Ryan Grecco combined for three innings on the mound in relief without allowing a hit or a run.
Game 2 Highlights:
  • Colby collected 20 hits in the nightcap, led by Noah Reichman's five hits at the plate.  The senior (headline photo) had a career day with two home runs and a double, scoring four runs and knocking in six.
  • The Mules led from the start, but Tufts pulled four runs back in the seventh and loaded the bases to bring the tying run to the plate.  Grecco returned to the rubber to shut down the Jumbo charge, finishing the game with 2.1 innings of shutout ball.
  • Reichman put an exclamation point on his day in the eighth inning when he came to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared them all with a stand up double.
  • Derek Woods pitched marvelously to open for Colby.  He earned his third victory of the season in his longest outing, going 6.2 innings while allowing only one earned run.
  • Shrake struck for another three hits in game two, collecting his 36th hit of the season and raising his average to .434 to join Palmeri (.449) above the .400 mark.
The Mules are back in action Sunday hosting #1 Endicott to close the busy week.  First pitch is slated for 12:00 PM.
