New London, Connecticut - Gavin Rothenberg the left handed first-year called game with thirty seconds left to give the Mules a 13-12 win over fellow NESCAC team Conn. College. A huge second half saw Colby move to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in the NESCAC conference.
The Mules had a slow start to the first half. The Camels almost doubled Colby's shots and quickly were up by 2. Max Solmssen opened the scoring for the visitors, halving their deficit but Conn. College responded quickly with their third. The second quarter was the same narrative as the Camels outscored the Mules 4-2. Rothenberg grabbed his first of the night inside the first minute of the quarter and closed out the half with his second, one minute before half. Colby trailed heading into the break, 7-3.
To start the second half, the Mules came back out as a completely different team. Justin Turley dominated in the center circle, winning 19 of 29 faceoffs on the day but 11 of those came in the second half. Adding to Colby's offensive dominance, they outscored the Camels in shots, 9-3 in the third quarter. Of the 9 shots, the Mules converted five as Doug McCarthy and Bennett Goller each had two to bring it within one. Conn. College pulled one back but Harrison Leenhouts rifled one past the goalie to make it 8-9 heading into the fourth.
But it wasn't all smooth sailing from there as the Camels quickly jumped back out to an 11-8 lead. The Mules found themselves on the back foot but continued to fight. In only two minutes Colby was back level–the first time since the game started. Ben Reynolds got on the scoresheet first, followed by Solmssen finding Leenhouts and Nick Sokolosky to make it 11-11. Turley won the rest of the faceouts from then on, adding to the Mules' momentum. Another Conn. College goal was canceled out a minute later by Sokolosky for his second of the game but the highlight reel moment came with thirty seconds left. After a timeout in the dying minutes, Solmssen found Rothenberg for the game clinching goal–his third of the game–to give Colby a huge NESCAC win away from home.
The Mules are back in action next Saturday as they journey down to Amherst, Massachusetts to take on Amherst College.
