Colby Closes the Spring Trip Battling Engineers, Titans

Clermont, Florida - The Colby College Softball team completed their spring training trip Thursday in Florida against two formidable opponents. In game 1, the Mules fell short to #14 MIT 11-2 in the rubber match of three games this week. In game 2 Colby narrowly lost to Wisconsin-Oshkosh with the winning run crossing in the bottom of the 7th for a 2-1 Titan victory.

Game 1 Key Takeaways:

  • After holding MIT scoreless in the top of the first inning, the Colby Mules scored the game's first off a line drive double from Ella Wilcox that scored two runs in the bottom of the frame.
  • MIT fought back in the second inning capitalizing on three Colby errors and a string of hits to push eight runs across.
  • The Mules did their best to battle back at the plate but MIT pitcher Caroline Langmeyer efficiently worked through the next several innings to secure the game-shortened victory.

Game 2 Key Takeaways:

  • Colby jumped on the board first after Carissa Cassidy scored when the Oshkosh defense was pulled away by Chloe Wilcox caught in a pickle between first and second base.
  • Oshkosh tied the game back up in the bottom of the first when a Titan runner scored on a passed ball.
  • Abby Orso went to work on the mound garnering four strikeouts and forcing multiple ground outs and pop-ups that kept the Mules in the game inning after inning.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, Oshkosh was able to push an additional run across the board on a walk-off single for the win.
  • Colby's defense was strong throughout without committing an error.
Colby returns to Maine after going 6-6 on the Florida trip, raising their record to 8-6 overall.  The Mules will be back on the road next weekend to open conference play at Hamilton College on Saturday.
