Mules Take Two on Day 5

Clermont, Florida - The Colby College Softball team continued their spring training trip Wednesday in Florida with back-to-back wins in rematches with Tuesday's opponents. The Mules showcased their strength and determination in an impressive 8-5 win over Gustavus Adolphus College in game 1. Using that momentum, the Mules continued to perform at the plate leading to a 9-5 win against Kalamazoo College.

Game 1 Key Takeaways:

  • Colby jumped on the board early with two runs on a passed ball that scored Carissa Cassidy from third base and a single RBI from Chloe Wilcox that plated Ayston Asadorian.
  • Gustavus College fought right back and kept the game tied until the sixth inning when they plated a run on an RBI single to give the Golden Gusties a 5-4 lead.
  • Victoria Ramirez, riding a hot bat all week, delivered a gaming-changing grand slam home run in the seventh inning to put the Mules on top.
  • Abby Orso shut down Gustavus Adolphus in the bottom of the seventh, securing the well-earned win for the Mules on the mound. She surrendered  mere three hits over seven innings while striking out an impressive eight batters.
  • Chloe Wilcox went 3-4 at the plate, leading the Mules in hits.

Game 2 Key Takeaways:

  • Colby captured the lead early in the nightcap against Kalamazoo.  In the bottom of the first Ramirez and Grace Gouin each recorded doubles to score two runs apiece.
  • The Hornets chipped away at the Colby lead, scoring one run in each of the first four innings to tie the game in the fourth 4-4.
  • The Mules regained the lead in the fifth inning scoring four more runs on an error, and RBI singles from Cassidy and Erika MacLeod.
  • Although Kalamazoo put one more run up in the sixth inning, they could not catch up to the Mules who took the 5-9 win off 12 total hits.
  • Gouin led Colby in hits going three for four at the plate, closely followed by Emma Burnham who went two for three.  Ashley Correll earned her first collegiate complete game victory, going the distance in the circle.
With one day remaining on Colby's spring break trip the 8-4 Mules will face a rubber match Thursday morning with #14 MIT before closing the trip in the afternoon against Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
