Colby Avenged Against #14 MIT, Takes Care of Union

Clermnt, Florida - The Colby College Softball team continued their spring training trip Monday in Florida with an impressive display of skill and energy, securing victories in both games. The Mules started strong with a hard-fought 7-5 win against Union College in extra innings and continued their momentum, triumphing over undefeated #14 MIT with a commanding 14-9 victory. 

 

Game 1 Key Takeaways: 

  • The Colby Mules were first to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning on an error by the Union defense. 
  • Kathryne Clay stepped into the circle first for the Mules and held the Union Garnet Chargers to zero runs throughout the first three innings. 
  • Union jumped on the board in the top of the fourth inning when the Mules made a pair of errors allowing three unearned runs to score. 
  • Colby responded in the bottom of the fourth when Ella Wilcox hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at four runs apiece. 
  • The rest of the game was a back-and-forth battle into extra innings where Colby and Union continued to put runs on the board.
  • Chloe Wilcox secured the win for the Mules in a dramatic fashion, hitting a walk-off 3-run home run to end the game in the 9th inning. 
  • Ashley Correll earned the win on the mound and surrendered two hits without allowing a run over five innings, striking out six. 

Game 2 Key Takeaways:

  • With bases loaded and two outs in the top of the 2nd inning, Erika MacLeod opened the floodgates for the Mules scoring the first run on a hard-hit ground ball that forced an error by the MIT pitcher. 
  • The Colby Softball team then put up an impressive six runs against the starting pitcher, Becca O'Connor. 
  • MIT answered back scoring four runs in the bottom of the second. 
  • Colby, determined to not let up, scored eight more runs across three innings, led by Victoria Ramirez with three RBI on a base-clearing double.  
  • Although MIT proved to be a difficult opponent, the Mules prevailed with a 14-9 Victory and ended the MIT 5-game winning streak. 
The Mules are back at it Tuesday facing Gustavus Adolphus and Kalamazoo.
