Middletown, Conn. - The ninth-ranked Colby Women's Lacrosse had a strong season opening on the road against 11th-ranked Wesleyan this Saturday, defeating the Cardinals 10-8. This continues an outstanding showing by the Mules with a record of 22-4 against the Cardinals since 2001.
The Cardinals challenged the Mules out of the gate, scoring for the first time just over a minute into the game. Colby was unphased, however, coming out ahead at the end of the first quarter 3-2. The second and third quarters were a back and forth, tied at 4-4 at the end of the second and 6-6 at the end of the third. It was in the fourth quarter that Colby pulled ahead, securing 3 unanswered goals. Not even the Cardinal's goal with 30 seconds on the clock was enough to save them, leading the Mules to their first victory in their first game of the season.
Although the Cardinals put up an impressive offensive attack, out-shooting the Mules 26-19, Colby's Sarah Hearns out-saved Wesleyan's Izzy Weintraub seven to five. This complemented the impressive defensive showing by the Mule's Ainsley Dion who had five draw controls for the game. A number of fantastic offensive performances by the Mules, including three assists by Julia Jardina and a whopping five goals by Ally Franz, allowed Colby to keep Wesleyan at bay throughout the game and surge ahead when it mattered most.
The Mules will have their home opener Saturday, March 9, at 12:00 against the Conn. College Camels in Waterville, Maine.
