Waterville, Maine - Colby hosted their final home game of the season tonight as the University of Southern Maine came to visit. It was a non-conference matchup, one which didn't affect the Mules' standings in their conference. Colby sits at 3-5 in their conference, putting them 7th overall while 8 teams qualify for the postseason tournament. The Mules started strong but ultimately fell to USM by a 89-72 final score.Â
The first half was promising defensively for Colby, keeping the Huskies out of the paint with their two-three zone and forcing them to shoot three-pointers but USM was able to knock them down. On the other end of the court, Max Poulton and Lucas Green knocked down triples of their own en route to 13 and eight points in the half respectivelyA late run from the Mules brought them into the half trailing 39-33.
In the second half Sam Hinman offered a spark with his strong defensive effort and shot creation–which he backed up with eight points from his six minutes on the court. Although Colby was able to stop the Huskies from shooting as many threes compared to the first half, the Mules ran out of time to make a comeback.
This weekend the Mules will wrap up the regular season visiting Amherst and Hamilton on back-to-back days–both of which are teams close to Colby in the NESCAC standings. These are important matchups as the Mules battle for a playoff spot.Â
