Amherst, Massachusetts - It was almost a perfect comeback ending for the Mules, one which would've secured their berth into the NESCAC conference tournament. However, Colby fell short to Amherst, 64-66, taking them to 11-12 on the season and 3-6 in the NESCAC.
The first half started fairly slow as both teams struggled to get shots to fall. Colby led most of the half until a late run from Amherst took them ahead into half. Max Poulton continued to have an electric end to the season as he posted 17 first-half points. Poulton had 5 three-pointers, five rebounds, a block, and a steal just in the first half. In the end, Amherst had more shots fall and Colby could only muster a seven-point difference as a late three from the Mammoths canceled out a Marcos Montiel three which would've put them within four. The Mules trailed heading into the break 33-40.
The Mules came out hungry, drawing within one early in the half after Lucas Green knocked down a three-pointer. But yet again the momentum shifted to Amherst as they surged ahead to a nine-point lead. From then on, Colby slowly but steadily crawled their way back into the game. With three and a half minutes to go, Poulton was fouled shooting a three-pointer sending him to the line where he made all three free throws to give the Mules the lead for the first time since the early first half. Colby held the lead until thirty seconds left when a Poulton turnover gave the Mammoths a go-ahead layup. Down one Colby had to foul after two missed free throws, sealing the game.
Green stepped up in the second half for Colby with 11 points while Poulton was one rebound away from a double-double with 9 rebounds and 25 points. In the end, this loss sets up a do-or-die game at Hamilton this Saturday. A win and Colby is into the postseason, but a loss leaves their fate up to Wesleyan who, if they beat Bates, takes the final spot from the Mules.Â
