Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Women's Ice Hockey team hosted Wesleyan University for a NESCAC quarterfinal matchup on Saturday afternoon. In a thrilling game the Mules defeated the Cardinals 3-2, advancing to the semifinals next weekend and improving their overall record to 17-7-1.
Colby brought a strong offensive presence from the puck drop, forcing Wesleyan to play a lot of defense early on. Midway through the first period
Meg Rittenhouse put the first goal on the board for the Mules with an assist from
Courtney Schumacher. Wesleyan answered immediately, tying the game at 1. The second period saw Colby goals by
Megan Martodam and a power play goal by
Breanna Studley. Goaltender
Mandy Busky earned an assist on Studley's goal. The Mules continued to dominate throughout the second period and into the third. In a period involving several penalties on both teams, Colby let up a Wesleyan power play goal in the last few minutes of the third. The Mules played strong defense and were able to maintain their 3-2 lead until the final buzzer. Busky made 28 saves on the night to earn the win for Colby.
The Mules advance to the NESCAC semifinals next weekend which will be hosted by the highest remaining seed.
