Middletown, Conn.- The Colby Women's Soccer team will play for their first NESCAC Championship tomorrow after a thrilling 3-2 win over top-ranked Wesleyan. The Mules bested the Cardinals in a back-and-forth affair for their first win against Wesleyan since 2016.
The Mules lost to the Cardinals in the regular season, as Wesleyan stormed to a regular season championship with a 13-1-3 record. But superb offensive play flipped the script.
Colby got on the board first with a shot from
Madison Genser outside of the 18-yard box into the left corner. The game would stay locked at 1-0 for the rest of the first half as the Colby defense kept Wesleyan at bay.
The last fifteen minutes of the match brought plenty of action. In the 76th minute, a great ball from
Avery Barton set leading scorer and reigning NESCAC player of the week
Abigail Jarvi up on the left side of the field. She beat two defenders before finding the top-right corner and putting the Mules up 2-0.
Despite the deficit, Wesleyan stormed right back with a goal in the 79th minute. But Jarvi put the game on ice with a brilliant goal from just past midfield. Eyeing a goalkeeper well out of position, she put up a shot right over the keeper's head.
Wesleyan would score a few minutes later after being awarded a penalty kick, but the Mules' defense held to grab the win.
Colby will play again tomorrow when they face fourth-seeded Amherst. This marks Colby's first trip to the NESCAC Championship game, and a win would guarantee their first NCAA Championship appearance since 1999. That game will kick off at noon, and streaming and live stats are available under the Schedule tab.
