Middletown, Conn. - Playing in their first NESCAC Championship game in program history on Sunday, the Mules fell to defending champions Amherst on penalty kicks.
90 minutes and two 10-minute overtime halves were not enough for either team to find a winner, so the two squads proceeded to penalty kicks. The Mules drilled four out of five, with the lone miss coming off the post, but the Mammoths were good on all five of theirs to take the crown.
Colby reached the championship game after two underdog victories against #3 Williams and #1 Wesleyan. Unfortunately, the run ended in a scoreless affair. Despite the loss, the Mules played the Mammoths close throughout the game, looking much improved from when the two teams clashed in the regular season.
Colby will now wait for the NCAA Selection Show, which will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Monday. If the Mules are granted an at-large berth, it would represent their first trip to the tournament since 1999.
