Middlebury, VT - The Colby College Mules (1-1-0, 1-1-0) fell to the Middlebury College Panthers (2-0-0, 2-0-0) by a score of 3-1 in their Saturday afternoon matchup.
The Mules started their second game of the season hot. With only 34 seconds elapsed in the first period,
Will Molson scored on a wrist shot from the edge of the left face-off circle.
Massimo Gentile and
Alex Keskintepe provided assists. However, it would prove to be the only goal scored by the Mules for the day. Six minutes into the first period, Middlebury evened the game up with a shorthanded goal. Tied at 1-1, Colby committed a costly error with a team penalty for too many players on the ice. Middlebury was able to capitalize on the power play, scoring with 12:38 elapsed on the game clock.
The second period was marked by penalties for Middlebury, with three minors and one major. However, Colby could not capitalize on eleven minutes of power plays. The Panthers extended their lead to 3-1 with a goal at the 16:11 mark. Colby had some notable looks to score, but were thwarted by the Middlebury defense.
The score of 3-1 would end up being the final score of the contest as neither team could convert on two power plays each.
Jayden Grier had a look to make the game 3-2 late in the third period, but his rebound effort was thwarted by the Middlebury goaltender.
Adam Costley was in net for the Mules, allowing three goals versus 15 shots. Gentile again led the way for Colby on face-offs, winning fourteen of his twenty opportunities.
Colby will take the week off until Friday, November 22, when they take on the Bowdoin College Polar Bears (1-1-0, 1-1-0) in the annual Colby-Bowdoin rivalry game. Last year's matchup on Mayflower Hill resulted in a 3-3 tie overtime. Fans are reminded to reserve their free tickets on the Colby College website.
