Waterville, ME - For the 152nd time, one of the most storied rivalries in Maine took place as the Colby College Mules (2-1-0, 2-1-0) defeated the Bowdoin College Polar Bears (1-2-0, 1-2-0) by a score of 5-1. Though Colby's Thanksgiving break had just begun, the Waterville faithful showed out for the Mules.
Nick Stapleton won the opening face-off for the Mules to begin the night. The first period was mostly void of action until 12:48, when
Alex Keskintepe was sent to the box for hooking. After his two minutes elapsed, it took
Jayden Grier less than one minute to put Colby on the board. The sophomore received a pass from
Ryan Moore and buried the puck in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Moore was penalized for kneeing with 16:32 elapsed in the first period, but the Mules killed Bowdoin's power play opportunity.
Grier kicked off the second frame with a bang, scoring his second goal of the matchup with just 32 seconds elapsed.
Jake MacDonald put a shot on the pads that Grier was able to clean up while
Max O'Brien provided an assist as Colby went up 2-0. A mental error for Bowdoin cost them later in the second period. The Polar Bears were assessed a two-minute minor for too many men on the ice. With 5:15 remaining in the second period,
Reese Farrell scored with
Jayden Mullens and
Donovan O'Neil picking up the assists.
Up 3-0 to start the third period, the Mules kept the momentum moving with a
Will Molson goal with 2:35 elapsed off the clock. Moore helped Molson with his second assist of the game. After Bowdoin's only goal of the game five minutes later, the score remained stagnant for ten minutes. Farrell picked up his second goal of the night when he scored on Bowdoin's empty net late in the third period.
Cooper Rautenstrauch made 25 stops for Colby while allowing a single goal, while the Mules bested the Polar Bears on face-offs, winning 38 of the 64 puck drops.
