Tip-Off Tournament Marks the Start of the Season for Women's Basketball

Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Women's Basketball team is set to host Plymouth State, Thomas College, and Westfield State this weekend in Colby's Gene DeLorenzo Tip Off Tournament. The Mules will take on Plymouth to begin the tournament this Saturday, Nov. 16th at 6:00pm and will face either Thomas or Westfield on Sunday depending on Saturday's outcomes.

Colby is coming off an even 12-12 overall record last season where they earned the seventh seed for the NESCAC Tournament. With a strong core of young talent, including all five of the Mules top scores returning from last season, Colby will look to improve on last years result.

Head Coach Chenel Harris-Smith will once again led Colby Women's Basketball as she enters her sixth season with the Mules. She had this to say about the upcoming season...

"Our team has put in an incredible amount of work this preseason, and we're eager to see it pay off. We're excited to test ourselves with a competitive non-conference schedule this season, featuring matchups against three nationally ranked teams. Our players have poured heart and soul into this program, and their growth is undeniable. With eight returners, including the NESCAC Rookie of the Year, Kate Olenik, our team chemistry and culture are stronger than ever before, creating a foundation of trust and unity that will drive us forward this season. This young, ambitious roster is ready to build on the momentum from last season and continue pushing toward greater success."

The eight returners are joined by two first-years who will look to make an impact on the program. Defne Pekinbas hailing from Istanbul, Turkey and Caroline Hartley from Scarborough, Maine.

Harris-Smith will be assisted by Sam Spadaro in her first season with the team after being an assistant coach for three years at the College of Staten Island, a DII program in N.Y. Haley Parker '18 returns for her second year on the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach.
