Troy, New York – "You're gonna need a bigger boat" was the phrase Chief Brody desperately muttered in the movie Jaws and was also relayed at ECAV Stadium this morning as the Colby Men's Soccer team sunk RPI in spectacular fashion. Bouncing back from a tough string of matches, the Mules lit up the score sheet in a 3-0 non-conference win–their most of the year. This win takes Colby to 4-6 overall and showcases the true strength of the NESCAC conference.
The Mules came out flying. Colin Leon found Mario Simoes who calmly converted six minutes in, his second goal in two games and his fifth of the season. After the goal, Colby continued to pile on the pressure as Jasper Paez and CJ Supan both forced saves from the opposing goalkeeper. Although the Mules controlled the game, RPI created chances at the other end, forcing Brendan McCarthy into two saves of his own. Colby went into the break with the momentum after a dominant first half.
The second-half whistle didn't change much for RPI as they had even more to deal with. Supan had two shots early on that went wide but eventually was rewarded after doubling Colby's lead off a corner. Freshman Zane Matraji also registered two shots but couldn't convert. In the end, the Mules controlled the game and were rewarded with two minutes to go as Jason Wallack found Arkam Traore to seal the win for Colby.
The Mules are back in action next Saturday, October 12th, as they visit Middlebury for a vital NESCAC conference matchup.
