Waterville, Maine - Senior day was a successful one for Colby Men's Soccer as Mario Simoes recorded a second-half hattrick, and Colby grabbed their first NESCAC win of the season. The Mules thrashed Trinity 5-1 taking their record to 6-7 overall and 1-7 in the NESCAC conference.
Colby got on the scoresheet early as sophomores Charlie Scott and Colin Leon connected for the latter's second of the season. Their dominant attack continued as Jacob Sams and Jasper Paez both tested the Bantam keeper. Ryan Stewart briefly doubled Colby's lead through a corner before Trinity pulled one back two minutes later. The Bantams ended the half with momentum but were overshadowed by Colby's nine shots, pinning them on the backfoot throughout the majority of the first 45.
Coming out of the break the teams were evenly split as the next goal would've been vital for both. Paez and Joseph Beshel forced three saves in three minutes as the Mules were barely denied a two-goal cushion. That breakthrough would come in the 79th minute as Simoes scored two goals in a minute, assisted by Leon and Arkam Traore respectively. The Brazilian caused problems for Trinity's defense, coming off the bench and creating space in between the lines. Colby's fifth goal was almost identical to the previous one as Traore found Simoes yet again for the final blow.
Colby looks to keep their momentum going next week as they travel down to Wesleyan in hopes of making the postseason. Catch them in action on Saturday, October 26th at 2:00 pm.
