Castine, Maine - Colby faced off against Maine Maritime Academy today in what could be seen as one of their most important games of the season. Although not a NESCAC conference matchup, the Mules still had to fight for an important win–one which they'll hopefully gain confidence from heading into their last stretch of matches. Colby won 5-1, taking their record to 5-7 overall and 0-7 in NESCAC conference play.
The Mules were shocked early on as MMAÂ took the lead only four minutes after kickoff. Their response: a goal less than a minute later as Jason Wallack tied the game up. From then on it was all Colby as they torched Maritime's goal. Jacob Sams found fellow sophomore Andrew Kirwan for a go-ahead goal and not long after, senior center-back Alex Moretti found the back of the net off a ball from Luke Pentikis. Wallack and Moretti continued to pose problems for MMAÂ as the pair linked up for Wallack's second of the game to round out the half.
Coming out of the break the Mules kept the pressure up. Pentikis forced another save and not long later Will Kogelmann was barely denied from getting on the scoresheet. However, goalie Cameron Ashley did have his work cut out for him as he was forced into four saves in the second half. The Mules did add another goal later on as Nicholas Donnelly found Drew Davis for Colby's fifth, sealing a dominant win.
Colby showed determination today as they fought back from an early scare. This result not only adds to their record but should be a confidence booster as the Mules host Trinity College this Saturday at 2 pm.Â
