Amherst, Mass. - The Colby College Men's Ice Hockey team fell just short of the Amherst Mammoths Saturday, falling by a score of 3-2. The Mules move to 3-5-2 on the season while the Mammoths improve to 8-4-0, good for fifth in the NESCAC.
The hosts jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a goal in each of the first two periods. Colby closed the gap to one score late in the third when
John McElaney connected for his team-leading fourth goal of the season, assisted by
Griffin Grise. Amherst tallied again with two minutes to play for what proved to be the game-winner.
Nick Stapleton's first score of the season gave the Mules hope with ten seconds remaining, but despite winning the final face off Colby was unable to get off a shot.
Andy Beran had 26 saves in net and now has 271 on the season, good for third in the NESCAC.
Colby returns to Maine for a midweek contest in Biddeford Tuesday against UNE before hosting Trinity and Wesleyan over the weekend.
