Mules Drop NESCAC Opener to Trinity

Box Score Hartford, Connecticut - The Mules had a tough first NESCAC conference game in their 2023/24 season as they traveled down south to face Trinity. The Bantams, ranked 8th in the nation, outlasted the Mules 83-69 and kept their undefeated streak alive. Colby falls to 7-5 and 0-1 in conference play.

The Mules limited Trinity's perimeter shooting the whole game, only allowing six made shots from beyond the arc. On the contrary, the Bantams dominated in the paint and on the boards. Trinity started on an 11-0 run, forcing the Mules to scramble. Colby never made it back in the first half but came close. A late run in the first half saw the Mules go from 18-30 to 32-36 to end the half. Max Poulton had two three-pointers en route to eight points to end the half. His efforts helped Colby get close but coming out of the break, Trinity broke away and never looked back. The Bantams continued to be effective inside the arc and had good shot selection from beyond. The Mules had 37 points off the bench, 11 of those coming from Junior David Stewart. Stewart shot 50% from the field and had one steal and two rebounds on the defensive end. Ben Kaczmarek also shot 50%, tallying 9 points and 4 defensive rebounds. In the end, Colby couldn't get back into the game but persisted all the way through.

The Mules played a strong game against a well-drilled Trinity team, giving a positive outlook to their season. Poulton led the scoring with 15 points with an additional 3 steals and 7 rebounds. Colby is in action again tomorrow as they travel across the state to play Wesleyan in Middletown, Connecticut. It will be critical to get a result from their second NESCAC conference game but it won't be easy as the Cardinal are 9-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
