Unable to Hold On, Mules Fall to Middlebury

Waterville, Maine - A matchup pitting two 7-8 teams against each other allowed Colby to get a leg up on NESCAC rivals Middlebury but due to a strong second half for the Panthers the Mules drop to 7-9 and 0-4 in their conference.

The Mules had a well built first half behind 15 from Jack Lawson and 14 from Marcos Montiel. Although Colby only shot 29% from beyond the arc, they had a big presence in the paint, a huge factor that needed addressing from the last game. Montiel shot 6 for 6(as well as shooting 2 for 2 from 3-point range) while Lawson only missed one from eight shots. Colby led the majority of the final parts of the half but never pulled away, heading into the half up 46-44.

Coming out of the break the narrative remained the same. The Mules kept a narrow lead, the only lead change coming right before the midway point in the half. Max Poulton had six of his eleven second-half points in the early minutes, propelling to a five-point lead. However, at the ten-minute mark, Middlebury took the lead and never looked back. A three-pointer from Lucas Green shrunk Colby's lead to two but it was not enough. It was a big day for Montiel, Lawson, Green, and Poulton, who tallied double-digits, making up for 71 of Colby's points. Lawson added seven rebounds while Montiel had two steals but a hapless final minutes left the Mules without a conference win.

Next up, Colby is back in action at home against non-conference opponent Husson.
