Chicago, Ill. - The Colby Women's Volleyball Team traveled to Chicago this weekend for the UChicago Gargoyle Classic at the Gerald Ratner Athletics Center, aiming to showcase their prowess on the court. They started off impressively with a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-15, 25-20) over Stevens, propelling their record to 2-0. However, in the subsequent match against the University of Chicago, Colby faced a tough challenge and ultimately lost 3-0.
Despite a challenging start against Stevens, where the Mules found themselves trailing 9-3, Colby quickly rallied back to claim the first set with a final score of 25-23. They carried this momentum through the remaining two sets. LJ Grant's impressive seven kills and five blocks, along with Hannah Wyllie's remarkable .429 hitting percentage, played pivotal roles in Colby's competitive performance. First year Brady Moseley emerged as the game's top scorer, recording a notable nine kills, while sophomore Sydney Bopp showcased her impressive defensive skills with six monster blocks. Allison Rodriguez made a significant contribution with 19 assists, and Sydney Sick added 11 assists of her own. Additionally, Reanna Yadao demonstrated her ability to retrieve and control the ball in the backcourt with a total of 16 digs.
Following their victory over Stevens, the Colby Women's Volleyball team faced the hosts, the University of Chicago, who handed them their first loss of the season. Despite the Mules' early dominance, where they held a 10-5 lead, the Maroons managed to erase the deficit in the opening set. Colby displayed solid defensive efforts, but the University of Chicago maintained their offensive momentum in the subsequent two sets, securing victories with scores of 25-15 and 25-18. The Mules demonstrated resilience throughout, recording a total of 112 attempts, including kills, errors, and zero attacks, while the University of Chicago had 101 total attempts. Moseley's performance was particularly noteworthy, tallying nine kills and 11 digs during the match. Furthermore, Sick played a crucial role, contributing 14 assists to the team's efforts. This outcome has caused a minor setback in the Mules' season, dropping their overall record to 2-1 but we are eagerly anticipating Colby's performance in their upcoming game.
The team's next game is scheduled for tomorrow against North Park University and Colby is eager to get back in the win column.
