Waterville, Maine - For the second game in a row, the Colby College Field Hockey team went toe to toe with yet another ranked NESCAC team. This afternoon, the Mules fell to #5 Tufts in a low scoring affair as a 2-0 loss coming from an own goal and late fourth quarter strike saw Colby drop to 2-6 on the season.Â
The first quarter, unlike the Mules' previous, didn't bring any action as both teams registered no shots. In the second, Tufts got in a rhythm, launching seven shots at the Colby defense but pushing all of them wide as the Mules didn't let anything get near goalie
Emily Loeb. Both teams went into the break goalless, as Colby's defense continued to prove a salient factor to keeping them in big games.
Both teams came out of the break maintaining their defensive dominance, until an own goal against the run of play saw the Jumbos take the lead into the fourth. A complete change of pace opened up the last 15 minutes as Colby fired two shots from
Lillian Kistner and
Charlotte Epker, the Mules' first of the game. Colby had a more offensive quarter as they tallied four shots, but unfortunately none hit the target. Tufts wrapped the game up in the final minutes with a late goal, concluding a game with zero saves on both ends as the sole shots on target from Tufts hit the back of the net.
Although the scoreline didn't go their way, Colby yet again played to the level of another nationally ranked Division lll team. Their defense allowed two shots on target the whole game, and while the offense didn't find it's footing until late, the Mules still show signs of promise going into the second half of the season.
Tomorrow night, Colby travels down to Bangor, Maine to take on the Husson Eagles, an out of conference game that will be critical as they look to turn their momentum around before hosting the country's best, Middlebury.Â
