Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Aidan Simmonds

Big Second Quarter Sees Colby Trounce Husson

Bangor, Maine - Pressure makes diamonds, especially in the NESCAC. Coming off a tough run of games in conference play, the Colby College Field Hockey team went up north for a non-conference game against Husson. Going into the second half of their season, the Mules were feeling the pressure to turn their momentum around, and they sure did. An emphatic 6-2 win over Husson this afternoon gave Colby their third victory of the season, taking them to 3-6 while Husson fell to 3-4.

Husson started hot as a quick goal in the seventh minute put them ahead 1-0. But the Mules had an answer, which came only five minutes later as Casey Winslow pulled them level. Going into the second quarter the teams were evenly matched, but Colby turned the game on its head. The Mules' offense brought the pressure as two goals a minute and a half apart catapulted them into the lead. A solo goal from Winslow gave her and the Mules their second of the game and Pernilla Show followed it up to give them three. But the Colby attack didn't stop there as a goal from Lillian Kinster made it four, while Catherine McNulty added another to end the half. The Mules led after the first, a whopping 5-1.

Coming out of the break, Colby didn't let up. Kinster's second of the game turned it into a blow out. But from here on out, it was all defense from the Mules. Husson tallied six shots at the defense while Colby only had one the rest of the game. The Eagles eventually got past Colby's back line late in the third to make it 6-2, but remainder of the match provided no goals as both teams couldn't get anything going offensively.

The 6-2 win for Colby was instrumental and will hopefully be a momentum boost for their remaining NESCAC games. Their defense remained solid while the offense had one of their best games of the season. This form will be crucial as Colby hosts the #1 Division lll team, Middlebury, on October 7th at the Bill Alfond Field. The Mules have come so close against each, ranked NESCAC foe which is promising heading into their toughest game of the season.
