Amherst, Mass. — After a tie against #2 Williams College yesterday, the Mules headed to #7 Amherst College. The Mules couldn't recover from the Mammoths' early lead and ended with a 5-2 loss, Colby's first of the season, making their record 3-1-2.
Despite Colby's consistently steady offense and lights-out defense this year, the Mammoths gained an early lead. In the first 10 minutes, a foul on Colby led to a penalty kick for Amherst, resulting in the game's first goal. At the 14:47 mark, Amherst scored their second goal off a corner kick. To answer the Mammoth's aggressive offense, Drew Davis attempted Colby's first shot on goal at 20:03 which was blocked by Amherst's goalkeeper. Following another corner kick in the 24th minute, Amherst scored their third goal of the game, putting the Mules behind 3-0 at halftime.
Jared McNair and Brendan McCarthy split time in the net, making a total of 3 saves. McNair started in the net for the Mules in the second half. Colby's Eduardo Casanova made the first goal attempt of the half but the ball was just high. At 55:29, Amherst widened the lead scoring their fourth goal. The Mules didn't back down, though, and put their first point on the board with a successful penalty kick by Eduardo Casanova in the 62nd minute. Casanova was awarded another penalty kick in the 69th minute resulting in the second goal for Colby, advancing the score to 4-2. Although Colby was on their way back from a 4-0 deficit, the Mammoths scored again in the last minute to put away the game.
Colby will be back at home this week for another NESCAC matchup against Tufts University on Saturday, September 30 at 3:00 p.m.
