Amherst, Massachusetts - The #11 ranked team in Division lll had a scare tonight as the Colby College Field Hockey team put up a fight until the end. A narrow 2-1 loss to Amherst takes Colby's record to 2-5, but shows the Mules' caliber and resilience in tight games as this became the third game the Mules have dropped by one goal.
The goalless first quarter showcased Colby's reliable defense yet again as goalie
Harri Baker and her back line blocked four shots at the frame. The second quarter proved more equal for both teams in attack but it was Amherst that broke the deadlock to take the lead into half, 1-0.
Colby came out of the break looking to claw one back and their offense did exactly that.
Pernilla Shaw tallied her fifth goal of the season in seven games to level the score, as fellow junior
Casey Winslow provided the assist. The fourth quarter proved fatal for the Mules as an early Amherst goal put the game to bed. Late efforts from Shaw and
Charlotte Epker were saved as Colby couldn't find a way back.
In a tough NESCAC conference, all of whom are ranked in the top 20, Colby has played up and showed that they can compete with anyone. Although a close and tough loss, the Mules have held their own, and look to continue to do so again as 5th ranked Tufts visits the Bill Alfond Field on Saturday at 1:00pm.
