Waterville, Maine - "Houston, we have a problem" was the phrase uttered by the Apollo 13 and the coach of University of Maine-Farmington tonight as the goal song blared over the speakers for the 12th time at Bill Alfond Field. The Colby College Field Hockey team had an electric night, tallying 12 goals while also maintaining a shutout against the Beavers, taking them to 2-3 overall. Led by two goals from
Molly Mitchell and another brace off the bench from
McKay Allain, the Mules turned their attack around this game, scoring more tonight than they have all season.
From the whistle Colby was on the front-foot. Two goals in the first five minutes, from
Catherine McNulty and
Claire Welch respectively, gave the Mules an immediate advantage. In the past, Colby have been the ones on the score sheet first but maintaining the lead has been the issue. It was the opposite in this case as
Casey Winslow assisted
Lillian Kistner for her first goal of the season, followed up two minutes later by Mitchell's first of the game. To close out the half, first-year
Annie Raynes tallied her first goal involvement of three as she assisted Allain, and later
Jenna London closed out the half with a strike to take Colby into the break up 6-0.
Going into the second half up six goals was unforeseen territory for the Mules, but nevertheless kept their foot on the gas, forcing six saves from 14 shots. Of the fourteen, three shots from
Elizabeth Takoudes,
Lily Harrington, and
Jessie Owles beat the goalie to more or less seal the win for Colby. The fourth quarter was no different from the preceding three as the Mules kept the pressure on, leaving goalie
Harri Baker unchallenged on the other end facing no shots the entire match. To open the scoring in the fourth, Mitchell grabbed her second of the game and soon to follow was Allain to secure her double. To close out the game, Raynes found the back of the net for her second goal of the season, coming off the bench to secure her third goal involvement of the game.
A needed win for the Mules tonight gives them momentum as they look for their first NESCAC win in Williamstown, Mass. this weekend where they face Williams at 12:00pm. Maintaining their solid defensive structure compounded on a relentless offensive effort like tonight, should be enough to find their second consecutive win, but the Mules will have to be picture perfect against another strong NESCAC opponent.
