Hartford, Connecticut - It was a cruel ending to the afternoon for the Colby College Field Hockey team's defense. Enduring 20 shots with 14 being on target wasn't an easy task, as goalie
Emily Loeb had 13 saves on the night to show for it. But the one that snuck past was the winner for Trinity this weekend as they defeated the Mules 1-0. Colby now drops to 1-3 overall, adding a second loss in NESCAC competitions, while Trinity jumps to 3-1.
Unlike the scoreline suggests, the first half started out fast, testing both defenses with action on either side. Loeb was under fire early as she came up with four saves in the first half of the quarter, holding off the persistent Trinity attack as she kept a clean sheet on the half with eight saves. On the other end of the field,
Lily Harrington and
Charlotte Epker tallied two shots a piece at the Bantam goal, as Colby were denied 7 times in the first half. The scoreline was level going into the break with both teams unable to find the back of the net.
Coming out of half, Trinity carried the momentum and controlled the game. An early goal in the third quarter broke the deadlock as Colby were pinned back on defense, only posting two shots on offense in the quarter. Things got worse for the Mules as the fourth quarter brought six shots from Trinity, who dominated possession and didn't allow one shot in their end. An end in which Colby mostly saw the ball in their own half drew to a close, as the defense held strong to end a one sided game.
This game gave Colby their second consecutive loss by a goal deficit, showing positive signs for the season as their defense has been a kingpin - keeping them in tight games until the end. Colby is back in action this Tuesday at home as they host the University of Maine - Farmington at 7:00pm. A game back at home should give Colby the edge as their in-form defense continuously proves hard to beat.
