Mules Fall in Overtime to Quick Nor'easters Goal

Biddeford, Maine - The Colby College Field Hockey team traveled down south this Wednesday, hoping to continue their winning streak after a 4-2 victory at Thomas College last weekend. The Mules lost to the University of New England in a tough 3-2 overtime battle, dropping them to 1-2 overall, but remaining at 0-1 in NESCAC conference play.

From the whistle the Colby defense was under fire, forcing three saves from goalie Emily Loeb in under a minute. A change in momentum saw the Mules respond late in the first period as a dominant attack lead to a Lily Harrington goal, her first of the season helped across by teammate Erin Quirk. The second period went back and forth as both teams struggled to get much going. Colby's defensive resilience endured the remaining period as they kept a clean sheet going into the break up 1-0.

To start the second half, the Mules were the ones on the front foot. Colby had the majority of possession and launched four shots at the Nor'eastern cage. However, the tide changed late as New England pulled one back to level the score. This didn't last for long as two minutes into the fourth period, Catherine McNulty grabbed her second goal in three games to pull ahead. Another dominant offensive period from Colby saw seven shots on the opposition but in the end, a late goal off a penalty corner sent the game into overtime tied 2-2.

The Nor'easterns' momentum carried over into overtime, tallying the game-winner within the first two minutes. Colby ended the game ahead by shots on frame but in the end, UNE proved opportunistic to improve their record to 2-3.

This Saturday Colby is back in action as the Mules travel to Hartford, Connecticut for their second NESCAC conference game against the Bantams of Trinity College at 11:00am.
