Box Score Lewiston, Maine - The Colby Women's Tennis team kicked off their 2023-24 season over the weekend at the Wallach Invitational hosted by Bates College. This tournament featured players from Trinity and Bates.
The Mules were well-represented with eight players in the 32-slot singles flight and four doubles teams in the 16-slot doubles flight.
One of the standout moments of the weekend was when senior captain
Sam Riordan claimed the singles title without dropping a set. In addition to Riordan's victory, sophomore
Ellie Gershaw and senior captain
Sydney Landau advanced, collectively making up three-quarters of the semi-finals field. Riordan secured her title by defeating Ally Friedman from Bates with a score of 6-3, 6-1 in the finals. The freshman duo of Jade Finestone and Michaela Landry also made a strong debut in their Colby careers. Finestone won her first two singles matches, while Landry triumphed in her first-round match.
Gershaw and Riordan delivered an impressive performance in the doubles, making it to the finals before losing a hard-fought match 6-8. Meanwhile, sophomores
Amelie Gal and
Maddie Omicioli secured a first-round doubles victory. The pairing of Jade Finestone and Bella Suk also notched a win.
Head coach Erin Reeves commented on the team's performance, saying, "Despite having only three days of practice before the tournament, the girls came out ready to play. They competed exceptionally well, and I'm extremely proud of the effort I saw."
The Mules will return to action on September 22nd for the ITA Regional Championships, which will be hosted by Wesleyan University.
