Waterville, Maine- The Colby College Field Hockey team traveled across town to compete against hometown rival Thomas College in the Elm City Challenge. The Mules defeated the Terriers 4-2 to earn their first victory of the season and improve to 1-1 overall.
Colby began the first half with two early corner attempts and strong offensive pressure. With minutes remaining in the frame, the Mules responded on the defensive end as well to end the first quarter locked at zero. In the second quarter the Mules and the Terriers saw back-and-forth play with both sides attempting four shots and with two saves by both goalkeepers. In the 13th minute the Terriers took the lead on a corner ending the first half with a 1-0 lead.
After a fairly even first half, the Mules gained momentum offensively in the third quarter. One minute into the frame
Pernilla Shaw put Colby on the board, connecting for her second goal of the season. The Mules continued to pressure with two penalty corners within the first three minutes, and despite the defensive efforts of the Terriers, the offensive combo of Shaw and
Erin Quirk produced another goal to put Colby in the lead heading into the final quarter of the match.
A penalty stroke for Thomas knotted the game at two goals apiece early in the fourth, but
Casey Winslow answered with the game-winning goal with five minutes left in the match. Shaw secured the victory as time ticked away, netting her second career hat trick (2021 vs St. Joseph's).
