Waterville, Maine - To kickoff the 2023-24 season, four of Colby's Assistant Coaches have been promoted to Assistant Head Coaches in each of their perspective programs. Those promoted are
Casey Dowd,
Troy Irvine,
Dorothy O'Donnell, and
Tyler Walsh who are all well deserving of this new title after being apart of Colby Athletics for multiple seasons.
Casey Dowd - Men's Lacrosse
Dowd will be entering his eighth season coaching the Mules now with the title of Assistant Head Coach & Offensive/Recruiting Coordinator. Before joining the Colby Men's Lacrosse program, Dowd the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Face-Off Specialist of the Year, was a four-year starter and face-off specialist for Siena College ranking third all-time in NCAA Division I history in attempts, tied for fifth in ground balls, and is sixth in face-offs won. He led Siena to regular season championships in 2012 and 2014.
Dowd has also coached at Mercyhurst University were he was an assistant coach for the 2016 season. He was the team's offensive coordinator and helped the squad to a 15-3 record and an NCAA Division II appearance. Dowd was drafted by the Rochester Rattlers in spring 2015 and was a protected player for the 2017 season.
Troy Irvine - Track & Field
Irvine joined the Colby Track & Field staff as an assistant coach for the 2019-20 academic year were he has had the responsibilities of coaching vertical jumps, horizontal jumps, the multi events, and the throws for the past four years. In his first indoor season with Colby and in 2022, he earned regional honors as the New England Women's Assistant Coach of the Year for two awards in just his first three seasons.
Before Colby, Irvine coached at the University of Maine and Central Michigan University. He has coached NCAA Division I Championship qualifiers, Canadian Olympic Trial Qualifiers, an Israel National Medalist, and numerous conference champions and scorers. Irvine is a University of Maine graduate and former school record holder in the pole vault and the heptathlon. Going into the 2023-24 season, he will now hold the title of Assistant Head Track and Field Coach.
Dorothy O'Donnell - Softball
O'Donnell, the 2010 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Player of the Year, will be entering her sixth season with the Mules now with the new title of Assistant Head Softball Coach. Last year O'Donnell helped lead Colby to a 24-14 record while coaching three Second Team All-Conference players. Before joining the Colby Softball coaching staff, O'Donnell was an assistant coach at Husson in 2012-13 and former JV then varsity softball coach in 2017 & 2018 at Ellsworth High School. She was also the head coach for the under-14 team at the Sluggers Baseball & Softball Facility in Brewer, Maine.
O'Donnell, a two-time All-NAC outfielder, was inducted into the Husson University's Sports Hall of Fame in 2018 as the program's all-time career leader in at-bats (550) and hits (195). She helped the Eagles to four straight NAC regular season titles and three consecutive NAC championships and berths into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Tyler Walsh - Men's Ice Hockey
Walsh, a head coach at North Yarmouth Academy and an assistant coach with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, started his tenure as assistant coach for Colby Men's Ice Hockey in the 2018-19 academic year. In his first season, the Mules won the New England Small College Athletic Conference title and made the NCAA Frozen Four. In 2022, Colby were the NESCAC regular season champions.
Before Colby, the 2014 graduate of the University of Maine, was the head hockey coach and assistant athletic director at North Yarmouth since 2016. Walsh was recruiting throughout New England and Canada during his time at NYA. He started his coaching career as a student assistant coach under then University of Maine head coach Tim Whitehead in the 2012-13 season and stayed in Division I hockey as the director of hockey operations at Canisius College in 2013-14. Walsh then headed to Michigan to work as an assistant with the national team development program. He is now heading into his sixth season with the Mules with the new title of Assistant Head Men's Hockey Coach.
