Middlebury, Vt. - The 12th ranked Colby Women's Lacrosse team's NCAA tournament run comes to an end against top ranked Middlebury after a strong performance in a quarterfinals matchup. The Mules finish the season with a 14-6 record while the Panthers head to the final four with an undefeated 21-0 record.
Colby knew they had to come out with some pace and knotted the first goal of the game as
Annie Eddy found the back of the net. However, Middlebury turned it around quickly scoring the next eight straight goals breaking out to a 8-1 lead with 11 minutes to go in the first half. The Mules did not back down and were able to close the gap to to four before the halftime break after three straight Colby goals from
Paige Saudek,
Elizabeth Hennessey and Eddy with her second of the game.
In the third, both teams played great defense as only three goals made it passed the goalkeepers. Colby capitalized on two of the three goals scored in the quarter with
Julia Jardina and
Ally Franz narrowing the Panthers led to just three. Despite the Mules strong effort against the top ranked team, Middlebury hung on to the lead outscoring Colby three to one in the final frame resulting in a 7-12 Mules lose.
Sarah Hearns had her best game of the year racking up a season-high 17 saves. Eddy totaled three points in the match (two goals, one assist) while
Cami McDonald grabbed two assists.
Ainsley Dion had an impressive seven draw controls as well.
The Colby Women's Lacrosse team will be back in action next spring in hopes for another dominant season.
